Privacy Policy
Effective: November 5, 2026 · Applies to Money Cleared for Android.
Money Cleared is a household budgeting app. This policy explains what happens to your information when you use it. In short: your financial data stays on your phone. Money Cleared has no servers that receive it, no accounts, no ads and no analytics.
What Money Cleared stores
Everything you enter or import: accounts, balances, transactions, categories, budgets, goals, household member names, rules and settings. Statement files you import (CSV, OFX/QFX, PDF) are read on your phone. Only the transactions you approve are saved; the file itself is not kept.
If you use Receipts, Money Cleared also stores the photo of each receipt, along with the merchant, date, amounts and any note. Photos are made smaller and their hidden details, such as location, are removed. Category suggestions are worked out on your phone from the receipt's text and your earlier choices. That text is used for the suggestion and isn't kept.
Where it's stored
In a database on your phone, encrypted with SQLCipher. The encryption key is protected by your phone's Android Keystore. Money Cleared turns off Android cloud backup and device-to-device transfer for its data, so it isn't copied to Google Drive or a new phone automatically. Receipt photos are stored in separate encrypted files on your phone, protected by the same key.
What leaves your phone
Nothing, unless you choose to send it:
- Money Cleared does not use the internet. The app does not request Android's network permission, so it can't send or receive data.
- Voice entry is optional and only starts when you tap "Say it instead". Your phone's speech service, usually from Google or Samsung, listens and turns your words into text. Money Cleared asks it to work on the phone, but the service may use the internet, and its own privacy policy applies. Money Cleared doesn't hear or keep the audio, and receives only the text.
- Reading receipts happens on your phone, using Google's ML Kit library built into the app. That library is designed to send usage statistics to Google, but Money Cleared removes its internet permission, so Android blocks it from sending anything.
- Exports (JSON, CSV, Excel, or Excel with photos) are written only to a location you pick. They are not encrypted.
- Encrypted backups are written only to a location you pick, encrypted with a password you choose. Money Cleared can't recover a backup if you forget the password.
What Money Cleared doesn't do
- No sign-in or user accounts.
- No advertising, analytics, crash-reporting or tracking software.
- No selling or sharing of data with anyone.
- No access to your contacts, location, SMS or other apps' data.
- No camera or microphone permission. Your phone's own camera app takes receipt photos, and its speech service handles voice entry. Money Cleared only receives the photo or the text. If you choose a photo, Money Cleared sees only that photo.
- "Connected accounts" in this version are a simulation for preview purposes. They contact no bank, and Money Cleared never asks for bank usernames or passwords.
Permissions
Money Cleared uses biometric / screen-lock authentication only if you turn on the app lock. Files are opened through Android's file picker, which gives Money Cleared access to the one file you choose.
Deleting your data
Settings → Security, privacy & data → Delete all data erases everything Money Cleared stored. Uninstalling the app also deletes it. Exports and backups you saved elsewhere are yours to delete.
Children
Money Cleared is intended for adults managing household finances and is not directed at children under 13.
Changes
If a future version changes how data is handled (for example, optional sync), this policy will be updated before that version is released, and the app will ask before any data leaves your phone.
